WeRateDogs tweets insights¶
WeRateDogs is a Twitter account that rates people's dogs with a humorous comment about the dog. WeRateDogs has over 8 million followers and has received international media coverage.
Combining cleaned twitter data and image predictions of dog breeds which were calculated using a neural network gives some interesting insights, which we will cover in more detail here.
The intuitive expectation of a positive relationship between a number of likes a tweet receives and how many times such a tweet is retweeted is confirmed with data: The correlation of likes and retweets is very high (0.9).
The above plots display this relationship and zoom in for more detail to areas where most of the data points are.

Since I am not a dog person, I was curious to see what a komondor looks like, so I checked one of the images which was used for the prediction and then I wondered no more why it might be fairly easy to recognize this one so well:

I decided to compare this with the top 15 most often predicted breeds to see how much overlap there is.

There are 5 breeds which are in both the highest predicted and the most tweeted groups:
- Golden retriever
- Pug
- Samoyed
- Pomeranian
- French bulldog
Here is the already known positive relationship of likes and retweets, this time distincted for the above 5 breeds:
From the above, it looks like puppo tweets really rock in popularity, which is definitely true. However, it is also important to note that there are actually only 20 puppos in the data, which makes only 1.38% of tweets, while most tweets have no mention of the dog stage.
Only 16% of all tweets are plotted above because the rest of tweets are of unknown dog stages.
WeRateDogs is known for having ratings with denominator of 10 and numerator higher than 10.
This is also reflected in some of the most popular ratings used in their tweets.
83% of all tweets use one of the following ratings: 12/10, 10/10, 11/10, 13/10.
Top 10 most popular dog names in tweets cover only 9% of all tweets, which show that dog names are actually very diverse.
